Pistol Shooting Drill - Shooting and Moving Forward with A Pistol

Updated: Sep 29

If you are conducting Close Quarters Combat (CQB / CQC) as a member of a Special Operations team of a Law Enforcement SWAT team member the ability to shoot and move forward with a pistol or patrol rifle is paramount. A lot over shooters over think the process. When the red dot is on the target send the round.

The general principles of shooting and moving is to keep your knees bent a little more than normal to act as a shock absorber. For me I take smaller steps to help minimize the movement in my firearms. A lot of shooter’s will have low shots because they have not establish a good movement base and in turn when the foot hits the ground there is typically downward movement in the barrel of the red dot pistol or patrol rifle.

The key is to practice. A tool you can use is a laser pointer to see how much movement is happening with the firearm.

Shooting On The Move – Forward

When it comes to shooting on the move a lot of people over think the process. I am trying to walk as naturally as possible while keeping my sights as still as possible. Now understand there will be some type of sight movement, but the amount of movement is what is important. Some people think that your feet have to be in a solid spot to fire the shot. The key is as long as that red dot is on the acceptable target area, send the shot. The other thing to look at is if you have a bunch of shots low, it more than likely your taking the shot when that lead foot is coming down and there is to much downward movement in your firearm causing the shot to go low.

Last thing is remembering that point of aim verse that point of impact with your carbine. You can have the best technique but possibly miss your shots because you forgot that point of aim, point of impact difference.

I would start learning shooting on the move forward before trying shooting on the move laterally. Once you feel comfortable with one target, try placing a couple others out at maybe 15 to 20 degrees. Don’t forget whenever you are setting the range up for shooting on the move use the 4 rules of firearms safety, especially number 4. Identify your target, what’s in line with it and what is behind it, never shoot anything you have not identified, and all your rounds are going into the berm.

When you start your live fire start close to build your skill. You may not fire a lot, but this will build your foundation. As you start moving further back don’t forget if you lower your firearm to a low ready position, finger off the trigger and weapon on safe.

Foot Movement

Let’s start with our feet. Try to walk as normally as possible, some people like to do some crazy things with their feet. I walk heal to toe just like I normally would when just walking. I like to take shorter steps to help with my stability. If I need to move faster, I just increase my foot movement, still keeping my shorter steps. I will put an add bend in my knees to act as a shock absorber if there is any uneven terrain as I am moving. This is what works for me. You will have to play around with your body type and see what works best for you.

Using A Visible Laser

A visible laser can be a great dry fire tool for working on your shooting on the move. You can use something like an PEQ-15 or get a handheld visible laser from somewhere like Office Depot. I like the laser for a couple of reasons. First, if your new to a red dot you may or may not see how much that dot is moving. The laser does make it easier to see the amount of movement in your platform. Second is if you have a training buddy, they can see how much movement and possibly give you some input about your technique to make shooting on the move better.

The video will explain the technique and you can see a practical demonstration of this pistol shooting drill.
